The Bowery Poetry Club

On Monday May 6th, my girlfriend and I visited the Bowery Poetry Club. We hopped on the train to Penn Station and then took a cab down to SoHo. The open mic event began at 6pm. We had about two hours before the show started so we spent some time visiting stores and shopping. The fee to get in was $10 for ticket and the experience was great and also eye opening. It was a nice environment with everyone sitting at candle lit tables. You were able to sign up to go up on the little stage which to no surprise, I did not sign up. Those that came up on stage introduced themselves and then were asked a random question by the host. Following that, they would recite a poem. It was very interesting and nice to see what other people actually do in their free time because this is something I never would've imagined doing. There were only about 8-10 people in the venue, but the people that visited ranged from aspiring novelists and teachers, to stand up comics. Each and every person that recited poems expressed such emotion that the words and message of the poem really attached and sank into you. What I enjoyed the most was the stand up comedy act performed at the very end. We were laughing hard because of the comedians jokes and even more because of the laughs of other people.
