Pub #5 What Will Your Verse Be

Poetry and music have a connection together and are more closely related than many may think. A song can be looked at as a poem set to music. Poetry and music both have the power of displaying many types of emotion and give the reader a real feel and connection to the piece. There are so many different genres in poetry and music that an audience will always be found, and a connection will be created. Lyricists and poets are capable of creating work with a certain tone and theme, while also being great at reaching the reader and having the theme be expressed to them. Similar themes and messages can be shared between poems and songs. The poems “All I Ever Wanted” by Katie Ford and “I Loved You Before I Was Born” by Li-Young Lee portray themes of love that are expressed in their own way by the poet. As well as the theme of love being expressed in the poems, it is also expressed in the song “LOVE.” by Kendrick Lamar ft. Zacari.
In the poem “All I Ever Wanted” by Katie Ford, a desire to love and be loved is expressed by the narrator. Love is an incredible emotion and bond with someone that is desired. The narrator is in search of this love, but it is difficult to find. “When I thought it was right to name my desires, what I wanted of life, they seemed to turn like bleating sheep, not to me, who could have been a caring, if unskilled, shepherd, but to the boxed-in hills
beyond which the blue mountains sloped down” (Ford 1-5). Ford uses this comparison to express how what she desires is not coming her way, as if it is actually running away from her and becoming harder to acquire. The narrator is the shepherd, and the love that is desired are the sheep, who turn from the shepherd showing their rejection and the difficulty to find love. The tone of the poem gives you a sense of sadness and want for the narrator to find love. This is especially portrayed when Ford describes campfires on the hills that lovers create. The narrator watches as love occurs in front of her, making the reader feel for her because that is what she is ultimately searching for. “That all I ever wanted was to sit by a fire with someone who wanted me in measure the same to my wanting. To want to make a fire with someone, with you, was all.” (Ford 23-28). It is expressed that all the narrator ever desired was to love and be with someone that also felt the same for them.
The poem “I Loved You Before I Was Born” by Li-Young Lee, expresses a longing desire for love to find the narrator. Lee is talking about someone that has a want and sense for love since before they are born. “I saw your eyes before I had eyes to see. And I’ve lived longing for your ever look ever since. That longing entered time as this body. And the longing grew as this body waxed. And the longing grows as the body wanes. The longing will outlive this body.” (Lee 3-9). The narrator knows of the love that they desire. This desire for a deep love will forever stay with them although the search is difficult. Time and time passes, and the narrator grows older, believing this longing for love will outlive them. The narrator feels as if the love they are desiring is just going further away from them. “I give you my blank heart. Please write on it
what you wish.” (Lee 21-23). The narrator has not lost hope for this search of love and will accept it at any time, no matter the wait.
In the song “LOVE.” by Kendrick Lamar ft Zacari, the artist is expressing his desire for his only lover. The artist begins by expressing to the one he wants and loves to give him a chance and that nobody is better than him. He will treat his lover better than anyone else. “So give me a run for my money, Sippin' bubbly, feelin' lovely, livin’ lovely, Just love me, I wanna be with you, ayy, I wanna be with Just love me, just love me, just love.” (Zacari and Kendrick Chorus).
They are expressing their desire to be with someone and their want to be loved back by them. The artist is making a point that he knows what the one he wants desires and he will give her all that. “I know what you need, Already on ten, all money come in, All feeling go out, this feeling don't drought, This party won't end” (Kendrick Lamar Verse 1). The writer does a great job expressing love in these lines by saying this love that he will provide will never go bland and will only get better and better. He is hoping that she will also love him and is assuring that they will be amazing for each other.
Love is the shared theme between the two poemsand the song. The poems and the song express a deep desire for love. Each piece expresses how deep of an emotion love really is. Although love may take a long time to come, the desire will always be there, and love will be accepted no matter how long it takes. People begin to feel very lonely during their hunt for love, but they know that once love comes, it will have been worth the wait and will overcome any other emotion. The themes and ideas of these poems and the song show how poetry and music both are related.
Poetry and music can both be related because of their many genres and ability to express similar themes and emotions. Whether reading a poem, or listening to a song, you can connect to the words written by the poet or artist. There are many songs and poems that relate with each other on many more genres than just love.
